How de Blasio Plays the Media
The de Blasio Dance: Bad Story About His Administration - ATTACK THE PRESS

Media "Nattering Nabobs of Negativism"
Spiro Agnew and de Blasio
De Blasio thinks homeless crisis is a case of ‘fear-mongering (NYP) Mayor de Blasio on Monday ripped The Post’s coverage of the homelessness crisis — and touted an estimated drop in the vagrant population based on a single-day census conducted in sub-freezing temperatures. * The Agnew de Blame the Press "Fear-Mongering" Edition * De Blasio 12/3/14: I had 2 “train” son "how 2 takespecial care w police." “With all due respect to your publication, which is well known for fear-mongering, let’s look at the facts. We have had a reduction in crime, we’ve had a reduction in street homelessness, and we are going to deal with problems related to mental health much more aggressively,” he said.*  The Post writes that de Blasio is in denial about thehomeless crisis because he accused the tabloid of “fear mongering” in its coverage and is relying on a street census taken in 27 degree temperatures:

NYP is Wrong de Blasio is Not in Denial He is Just Controlling the Message and the Press
Bill de Blasio in denial on homeless horrors (NYP Ed) John Tucker was still plaguing Manhattan’s West Side on Monday, two days after The Post used its front page to display the vagrant’s blight-inviting behavior. Yet Mayor de Blasio insists he’s got everything under control.

de Blasio "Don't Believe What You Read In the NYP and Daily News About Crime Rising"

Friday Do Not Believe Everything You Read in the NewYork Post': Mayor Smacks Down Tabloids (NYO) Once again, Mayor Bill de Blasio dinged the city’s two tabloids today, telling radio listeners that the New York Post and Daily News are greatly exaggerating the threat that crime and shootings pose to the five boroughs. Mr. de Blasio, a Democrat, appeared on WNYC this morning, taking call-in questions from New Yorkers for the first time since he became mayor more than a year ago. He took special aim at “New York’s Hometown Newspaper.” Update Last Night Crime One killed, 6 wounded in shootings across 3 boroughs (NYP) * Man fatally shot standing in his Brooklyn driveway (NYP) * Two killed, five wounded by gunfire in three boroughs (NYDN) * Elderly woman latest victim amid citywide surge in rapes (NYP)

The Mayor Attacks the Press and the Reporters At the Press Conference
“What are you guys going to do? Are you going to keep dividing us?” de Blasio asked reporters when asked about the anti-NYPD rhetoric and call for violence that were heard at these protests, during a press conference at 1 Police Plaza

We Now Know From Emails That the Press Was Right About Noerdlinger Connections to Sharpton
De Blasio blames media and exposes his heart lies with protesters (NYP) Late in the day, the mayor’s mask of conciliation came off. Actually, he ripped it off with a snarl and gave vent to his smoldering anger at what he regards as the real culprit. No, it’s not the protesters who beat and spit on cops and accuse them of being the KKK. It definitely isn’t the mobs chanting for dead cops. Nor is it those who shut down highways, bridges and invade stores to disrupt the holiday season. The real problem, as de Blasio sees it, is the media. I kid you not — he actually shot the messenger. He accused the reporters assembled in front of him of stoking outrage by focusing on “the few” protesters doing “immoral” things. * Noerdlinger: A liar working for liars to help tell lies (NYP Ed) Now we know Rachel Noerdlinger wasn’t just a liar, she was a liar working for other liars to help tell lies. Officially hired as First Lady Chirlane McCray’s chief of staff until she was forced out by scandal, Noerdlinger was in fact working as liaison to her old boss, Al Sharpton, for the entire de Blasio administration. E-mails released just before the holiday weekend (in a classic effort to bury bad news) show that Noerdlinger regularly passed along official talking points to Sharpton — while also counseling the mayor on how to keep Sharpton happy. After Sharpton’s incendiary rhetoric humiliated both Mayor de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton at last July’s infamous press conference, she got City Hall to pull back from exposing Sharpton as — what else — a liar.

"Would you all like to have that discussion about yourselves? You're in the public eye." "A lot of really nasty stuff was done here. It is clearly for a purpose. It's quite obvious: Why would so much attention be given to one person and her personal life?" he asked. "It's clearly a pretty systematic effort to undermine certain work that's being done," de Blasio said, although he did not provide concrete examples when given the chance to do so in a follow-up question. De Blasio said Noerdlinger, who said she's leaving to spend more time with son Khari, 17, is "welcome back to the administration" when and if she feels she's taken care of her family issues.* De Blasio Decries 1950s-Style ‘Smear’ Campaign Against Noerdlinger (NYO) Mayor Bill de Blasio today railed against what he called a “nasty” and “repulsive” smear campaign — which he seemed to compare to the McCarthyism of the 1950s — that led in part to the stepping down of his wife’s chief of staff, Rachel Noerdlinger.  NOERDLINGER COVERAGE ‘REPULSIVE’ -- De Blasio lashes outat the media -- Capital’s Sally Goldenberg: In speaking to reporters, the mayor criticized the press corps for its coverage of Noerdlinger. It's repulsive, but it's become quite common. You guys do what you want, but for the rest of us as citizens, as people trying to make this city better or this country better, we have to get on with the work and not be putting so much time and energy into one person's personal life when we have things like affordable housing, job creation, education to talk about.”

He went on in the vein for several minutes, becoming more forceful and shutting down a persistent reporter by addressing him as “my friend,” a phrase he paired with a death stare. His heart remains with the protesters, and in spirit, he is still with them, denouncing the very police force that works for him. His passion for the anti-cop agenda is so deep that he wasn’t capable of following his own advice to take a break from divisiveness for even a single day. What you manage to do is pull up the few who do not represent the majority, who are saying unacceptable things, who shouldn’t be saying those things, and they – some who actually physically attack police officers, which I’ve said is absolutely unacceptable. We will prosecute them to the fullness – every – fullest – everyone must participate in finding those individuals, providing information to the police, intervening to stop them, alerting the police. I will keep saying this over and over. The question is will you tell the world about it. Because you all are part of this too.” “The vast majority of our citizens are good and decent people who do not say negative things, racist things, nasty things to police – threatening things to police. The few who want conflict attempt that. And unfortunately, so many times, you guys enable that,” de Blasio said as he pointed his fingers to the media. “I don’t see reports on the many decent good people. I don’t see reports on the everyday cops who do the exemplary thing, and hold the line, and show restraint and discipline no matter what invective is hurled at them… we know a different reality.” When the reporter attempted to push back, de Blasio said, “That’s how you want to portray the world… They, my friend, are not the majority. Stop portraying them as a majority.”

Mr. Sharpton claimed news outlets zero in on his relationship with President Obama and Mayor de Blasio–his former aide, Rachel Noerdlinger, was chief of staff to Mr. de Blasio’s wife before taking a leave of absence this week–because powerful interests never wanted to see either of them win their posts. (Mr. Sharpton would also not confirm another report today that he offered Ms. Noerdlinger her old job back.) “A lot of people don’t like the fact that President Obama is the president, a lot of people don’t like the fact that Bill de Blasio won for mayor and certainly don’t like the act that I’m still here—and I ain’t going nowhere,” Mr. Sharpton told the Observer.

They gave me opinions that have never crossed my mind. They made it sound like NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton is my sworn enemy, when in fact he has my full support. There is a small but stubborn group of people who adamantly oppose the efforts of Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton to create a more fair and equal policing system.  Myopically loyal to a status quo that serves their personal interests at the expense of everyone else, they are doing whatever they can to stop reform – and that includes spreading lies to irresponsible reporters.

NYT: Media Did Not Invent Defamatory Lies Against Noerdlinger . . . Not McCarthyism Charges Against Her True

True News Posted Two Days Ago The Media's Attack on Noerdlinger Facts McCarthy Invented Attacks
De Blasio Dumps Rachel Noerdlinger, Accuses the Press ofMcCarthyism(NYT)What went “wrong,” according to Mr. de Blasio, was the news media’s reporting on Ms. Noerdlinger, which he seems to believe went far, far out of bounds. How far? Senator McCarthy far. “We saw this in the 1950s, we’ve seen this throughout the history of this country,” Mr. de Blasio said. “If someone wants to smear people and use that for political purposes, there’s a pretty easy playbook for doing it. It’s repulsive.” The problem with Mr. de Blasio’s analysis is that the media never came close to using the McCarthy playbook – that is, spreading defamatory lies to destroy someone’s career. The litany of embarrassments for Ms. Noerdlinger and her boss  – the omission on the background check, the convicted-of-manslaughter boyfriend, the ugly tweets, the unpaid parking fines and tolls – were not invented. They were reported – maybe fairly or unfairly, maybe for sensationalist or vindictive reasons, or maybe because they were eyebrow-raising. But they were true. Ms. Noerdlinger was a public official – and a very highly paid one, in a vaguely defined job as a sort of unofficial community liaison, on call when tensions rose, as in the death of Eric Garner, killed by police officers on Staten IslandWhat’s repulsive is that Mr. de Blasio has used Ms. Noerdlinger’s travails to don the self-righteous garb of victimhood, and to condemn the media for an underhanded attack on public service. Mr. de Blasio and Ms. McCray made a bad hire. Ms. Noerdlinger didn’t work out. If he still thinks  she is the best person for the job, and has proved herself a benefit to the administration and the city, then he should stick with her. But don’t dump her and blame McCarthyism.* Recent Headlines Test Mayor's Relationship with Press Corps(NY1)

Even Schneiderman is Blaming the Press

Eric Schneiderman Blames Press for Promoting Republican Challenger(NYO) Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, coming off his easy 14-point triumph over Republican challenger John Cahill, blamed political reporters for depicting the race as remotely close. Mr. Schneiderman defeated Mr. Cahill, former chief of staff to ex-Gov. George Pataki, by nearly half a million votes–comparable to fellow Democrats Gov. Andrew Cuomo and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s victories over GOP Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Onondaga County Comptroller Bob Antonacci. Speaking on the Capitol Pressroom radio program, the state’s top lawman said the media had falsely portrayed the contest for his office as competitive.  Honestly, I think it was more a phenomenon of the political press and insiders. They like a horse race,” he said. “I think there was an effort by my opponent and he was helped by some of the press in making it look like it was closer than it was.”

McCray's Joins Bad Press Poll #s Turkey Trot
Two press releases from City Hall were unusual. The first announced that “First Lady Chirlane McCray, joined by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand,” would distribute turkeys at a Brooklyn pantry, and the second announced that they had done it. By having an honorary First Lady “joined by” an elected U.S. Senator, the releases were jarring, especially because of their timing. They arrived as a poll showed New Yorkers don’t like McCray’s big part in her husband’s administration. Quinnipiac reports that 71 percent think she should play a minor role or none at all, while only 24 percent want her deeply involved in public business. Just days earlier, Rachel Noerdlinger, McCray’s $170,000 chief of staff, took an unpaid leave to deal with her son’s troubles. Voters want the leave to be permanent, telling pollsters by nearly two-to-one they don’t want McCray to have a chief of staff. Naturally, her husband disagrees, which is probably why Mayor de Blasio hyped the turkey event. He called McCray “highly effective,” insisted “she’s going to have a staff” and said New York is lucky to get her “for free.” Free isn’t free if taxpayers pay for a staff, yet reality often escapes de Blasio. When Quinnipiac showed that his support among whites is collapsing, falling to 34 percent, he argued with that, too. He said public criticism “doesn’t necessarily make it right,” which is, technically, true. But as one political operative notes, de Blasio invariably says “polls are inaccurate unless they are good for him.” That’s the mayor’s personal “tale of two cities.” He’s right and everybody else is wrong.

Sunday Update Former city design head blasts mayor’s plan to remove portraits(NYP) Mayor de Blasio’s off-the-wall plan to take down the City Hall portraits of white historical figures is not only dumb, it’s also “condescending’’ to minorities, a former city official said Saturday. “The premise is stupid,’’ said Michele Bogart, an ex-vice president of the Public Design Commission, which overseas the portrait collection. “You take down the dead white men because they represent something you don’t like in history instead of the portraits being a point of conversation. Use it as a teaching tool.’’ De Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, want to banish the portraits of former mayors, presidents and military heroes — some by famous artists — to make way for art that “celebrates’’ the city’s “diversity.’’“I don’t think it’s appropriate for the mayor to be bashing the previous mayor through the portrait collection,’’ Bogart said. Modal Trigger Michele Bogart is now a professor at Stony Brook University. “It’s not a political football. Sheldon Silver elected to 11th term as speaker, despite probe(NYP)* Scared sheep in theNew York Assembly keep Sheldon Silver as their speaker(NYDN) Democrats turn a blind eye to leader's secret payments from a landlord law firm. Who cares that Sheldon Silver opened the door to wholesale legal bribery in the Legislature? Not his Assembly Democrats, who reelected him speaker without a whiff of concern. Silver has secretly taken substantial payments, for at least a decade, from a small law firm specializing in helping New York City building owners lower tax bills. Its clients include big landlords, many with interests in legislative action. While state law requires Silver to disclose the sources of private income, he never included the name of the landlord law firm, Goldberg & Iryami, in his disclosure forms. If that’s acceptable practice, Silver has given big-spending concerns a clear path for clandestinely putting lawyer-legislators on their payrolls.* Sheldon Silver says he has not heard from the feds as part of probe into law firm pay(NYDN)
